(Saphhos’ poem “An Old Age” [lines 9-20]. Papyrus from 3 cent. B.C.)
Don’t wait for permission.
Max out what you can accomplish in one session
because a session is focused time, and therefore, precious.
Incorporate one novel element or technique into each track.
Novelty is your leading edge that extends alongside the music.
Gradually and deliberately refine your methods, materials,
and intensity of attention.
Experimenting leads to inspiration, not the other way around.
Build via contrast: textured against smooth, new amongst old,
synthetic mingling with the acoustic.
If it’s boring you, it will also bore other listeners.
Like ripples in a still pond, build outwards
from the material already at hand.
Musical contexts teach us about musical concepts,
so work on whole pieces instead of technical things divorced from music.
Be vital because a music’s energy doesn’t transcend that of its maker.
