Database: Jennifer Loveless On The Quality Of First Takes

“Speed is really important to me in production, and I love taking the first take of things and making that work. There’s something in the first take that has a quality I can’t quite put my finger on, but it’s almost like you can hear the excitement of playing something for the first time. Maybe it’s in the groove or the accent, or even in the imperfection. So when I first start playing something that I like, I have to keep playing it and I’ll be falling over myself to hit record just to make sure I have it as I first heard it. I often find if I stop, I’ll either miss out on a note, or the groove or even the entire sequence itself. I’ll then effect the sound after it’s been recorded.”
