    Improvising To Find Something Interesting

One of the quandaries I find myself in when I sit down to play keyboard is how to come up with something interesting—and by interesting I mean something that I haven’t quite heard before.   I begin by just playing. My hands go towards the minor keys, but I’m not thinking about keys if I can… Continue reading

Resonant Thoughts: Annie Duke’s “Thinking In Bets” (2018)

“What makes a decision great is not that it has a great outcome. A great decision is the result of a good process, and that process must include an attempt to accurately represent our own state of knowledge.” Annie Duke, Thinking In Bets, p. 27. Continue reading

    Synthesis Thinking

The most striking difference between composing for acoustic instruments and virtual synthetic tones has to do with expectation. When I sit down to play piano, I have an excellent idea how it will sound ahead of time and how the instrument—whether it’s a real piano or a virtual one—will respond to my touch. The layout… Continue reading

    On Concepts Out Of Context

I find myself reading (fiction and non-fiction) whilst on the lookout for interesting standalone phrases. This may say more about what I notice that what the authors wish to highlight, but the phrases are nevertheless concepts to think about. Here’s a few I’ve been pondering:  reverse our usual method   micro-mistakes   obstacles to dynamism  minimal gestures … Continue reading

Production Workflows: Working With Call And Response

A technique which has served me well in composing, when I’m layering one part upon another, is to think in terms of call and response. In most situations, a new part takes shape as I listen to what I already have and try to figure out how to complement that. Keeping in mind the possibility… Continue reading

Production Workflows: From Experimentation To Performance

Working at the computer, I was trying my best to keep my experimenting and performing separate. I was going through sounds, exploring the endlessly morphing dimensions of the music software, listening and evaluating, reacting and thinking it through. But my impulse is always to get on with something—to build a prototype rather than mull things… Continue reading
